Read Across America

"The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" - Dr Seuss

This week we celebrated
Read Across America Week
The entire week was full of Dr. Seuss stories and fun activities

I love celebrating the magic of reading
what better way than to review rhyming
and word families with a fun twist!

Monday we named: Who Day!
Students dressed like a who and we read ...
Horton Hears a Who
By: Dr Seuss

I love how awesome these elephants turned out.
At the bottom students wrote...
"a person is a person no matter how small"
We talked a great deal about how we are to treat one another.
These came out amazing and I love that they will be displayed for a while on our bulletin board.

Tuesday we names: Tear it up Tuesday
Students came in animal print and we read ...
If I Ran the Zoo
By: Dr Seuss

For this book we gave students an animal cart to create there very own animal!
Kindergarten attached all their carts to make a crazy train of our made up animals
then we finished the sentences If I ran the zoo ...

Wednesday we names: Wacky Wednesday
Students came in mismatch clothes and socks
We read ...
Fox in Socks
By: Dr Seuss

We used these crazy sock day worksheets to graph the different socks we wore.
I let them wear their socks for a good portion of the day and they were thrilled!
Sometimes its the little things:)

In the afternoon we made these adorable foxes and put rhyming words on their socks!

They look amazing in our hallways and I love how each fox came out so differently!

Thursday we named: Thing Thursday
Students dressed in red or blue or thing 1 and thing 2
We read ...
Cat in the Hat
By: Dr Seuss

Here is a great worksheet for students to make a text to self connection with the story

We made thing hats and read our Cat in the Hat poem
Students were able to read every word in this poem the first time threw
How AMAZING!!!!
They were so excited to be able to read it independently...

How cute did these little guys turn out!!
We tied in rhyming by adding -at words on the hat

Friday we named: Fun Food Friday
Students dressed at a character from the books and we allowed to wear hats
We read two books this day and had many yummy snacks!

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish
By: Dr Seuss

Students were then given a handful of goldfish and they filled in this graph independently
They rocked this activity and we had a lotta fun doing it!

What's a fun food day without some green eggs and ham!
Green Eggs and Ham
By: Dr Seuss

We used these worksheets before we began
Students made their predictions, drew their snack and
then wrote how they liked Green Eggs and Ham

Bon appetite...

The loved the green eggs and ham and I loved being able to provide them with this!
Next week we will be celebrating Green Day where we will eat all kinds of green fruits and vegetables. I loved how willing they were to try something new and I can't to introduce them to some more yummy foods!

The community was very involved in our Read Across America week.
We had several guest readers come to visit classrooms this week
Can you guess who came to visit us ...

What an exciting week of reading!
Can't wait to continue to watch these kiddos reading skills continue to blossom!
