Snow Day

I have to say I love a good snow day ...
and this week I have had two extremely productive snow days.

However ... it forces some consolidation and discarding of lessons or activities.
This week I was planning some creative writing about snowmen.
I love these two books: "Snow Party" and "Snowmen At Night"!
Both fabulous books and encourages creative thinking.

I love this little activity inspired by Cara Carroll and the First Grade Parade.
Students use shapes to form their snowmen and write about what they think a snowmen do at night.

I love how these snowmen come out so unique.
Students also get very creative in describing what they would do at night if they were a snowman.
Could you imagine being a snowman at night ... snow parties, snowball fights, and winter games.

"Stella Queen of the Snow" is another fabulous serious of books. This one is one of my favorite.
Stella tells her brother Sam all about winter and all the things you can do in the snow.
Sam is super curious and has lots of questions for Stella about the snow, her responses are quite interesting and innocent.
A creative and entertaining story for sure... check it out:)

Snowflakes are so unique.
Cut out a variety of shapes and have students make their own snowflakes.
The activities to follow up this story are endless....

I Wonder ... What do you wonder about the snow?
When it snows ... What do you like to do in the snow?

"The Snow Day" and "All You Need for a Snowman" are some more of my favorite stories.

"The Snowy Day" is by far a classic and can be used to describe cause and effect with what happened to Peter's snowball, retell in what happened on Peter's snowy day, or a text to self connection between what the character did on his snowy day and what you like to do on your snow day.

"All You Need for a Snowman" is a great read for instruction on how to build a snowman.
I love using graphic organizers and encouraging students to describe the steps to build a snowman. The steps can of course go on forever but consolidate them into four simple steps and allow students to share how they like to build a snowman.

If you do not already have these books find them at your local library or online.
I used sites like youtube where authors read the book out loud.
If you can't find the books near you this can be a great resource and a different approach to a read aloud.

Hope you are all enjoying your snowy day!
