Punxsutawney Predictions

Punxsutawney Phil has made his prediction for 2015 and it looks like we will have six more weeks of winter. Seems fitting on this very snow day ... probably the most snow we have gotten in one snow fall this year.

Winter is always an interesting season for teachers in my area.
Being from Northeast PA you never really know what kind of winter you will have but it usually comes with a good amount of snow. The past few days we have gotten accumulations of snow in the early morning making it difficult for us to get into school. Hence the two day week of school last week.

Groundhogs Day is a great way to get students thinking and discussing predictions!

I like to read "Wake Up Groundhog!"
Not only is it good for the holiday but also to talk about how to ACCURATELY make predictions.

The story is all about a younger groundhog who loves being outside and knows all the signs for Spring. She wakes up her Uncle on Groundhogs day to make his famous predictions but Phyllis believes he has made the wrong prediction. She shows him all of the signs that Spring is coming early! The family had their doubts about Phyllis and her ability to be the groundhog who makes predictions but she proved them wrong.

So many teachable moments in this story!

This craftivity can be used to discuss information about Groundhogs, predictions, Groundhogs Day.
Fill up your classroom library with these other fictional stories about Groundhog's Day.

AND you can find so many Non-Fiction books in your local library.

Don't just limit yourself to books but consider using local sites as well.
PebbleGo is often my go to site when discussing animals or history.

Here is another resource I found that I thought would be nice to share with my kids...

I love research (if you couldn't tell already)!
In my TPT store you can find this flip book to help with students research on Groundhogs.
Find it HERE!

I am in the process of completing another unit for sale with math and reading activities.
Not to mention some graphic organizers, details for the craftivity, as well as my Groundhog Research Project!
