A Healthy Twist to a Green Celebration

So many schools are moving toward Heathly School Campaigns and this has to be a day to incorporate into your St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

I had students bring in several green fruits and veggies we could try and share together. Many of these items were new to students and others were some they enjoyed frequently.
Each year brings a new stash of snacks but always something new for someone in the room.

They loved this taste testing party and I was thrilled that I could expose them to new healthy snacks.
I only allowed them a little of everything but of course they wanted more.
I mean seriously couldn't get enough!

This whole week we talked about what it means to be LUCKY!
I read the book The Luckiest Leprechaun

What a great book to talk about friendship and what it means to be a good friend.
My students loved talking about what it means to be lucky and they loved expressing what it means to be a good friend.

We used this anchor chart to record what makes us feel lucky!
They did a great job differentiating what makes them feel lucky and what makes them feel happy.

After discussing what makes us feel lucky we made these crafts from the First Grade Parade.
They came out so cute!

Students used post its from the anchor chart to complete their sentences.
These leprechauns came out adorable and they are quite festive in our hallway.

This week was all about Author's Purpose!
This was the anchor chart I used to discuss the difference between a story that informs and a story that entertains us.

I used pieces of poetry to challenge students understanding of text.
What a great way to assess their understanding of Author's Purpose.
This week we also read the story The Rat and The Cat.
This story is apart of our reading series and is so suspenseful!!! They get so into the the story its adorable. Really kicked off our Author's Purpose discussions with a bang:)

To top it all off Scholastics made a huge delivery to my room.
To a teacher this is our Christmas ... We love a good book to read aloud with our students.

Next week we will be enjoying some cowboy stories and this package came just in the nick of time.
I am so excited to read Little Red Hot, talk about cowboys and cowgirls, and research a little about the Armadillo. This guy we see often when talking about "A" words but really what do we know about him?? This week we will do a little digging and uncover a lotta facts about the armadillo!
