Bats Spiders and Spooks

I can't believe how fast things are flying by!

This week we took some time to talk about bats and spiders oh my:)

The Very Busy Spider
by: Eric Carle

This is where our week began ...
I found some free retell pictures on TPT here

and we used them to identify the characters in the story and retell the events in the story!

My students loved identifying what character came next in the story
and then representing that character in our retell line.
I then had one of the remaining students retell the whole story ...
she was even able to retell majority of what each animal wanted to do with the spider!
YESSSS!
This was awesome!!

Then we discussed how the spiders web changed from the beginning of the story to the end.
Students then completed a BME of the web change with this worksheet here

We discussed a bit more about spiders ....

What they look like and what they can do

Then we made these poems and created these little spiders to go with them.
Find the poem layout here

ADORABLE!

I am so happy with how they turned out:)

To wrap up our short spider unit we labeled some spiders and read this super cute tale
The Spider and The Fly
by Mary Howett

Here are a few more books to share with your kiddos about spiders

All of that in two days and then we moved onto bats

I love talking to students about both bats and spiders but they loved the bats!

For this retell we read
The Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat
Lucille Colandro

Here are the retell pictures I used

and here is an adorable retell worksheet that my students loved!!!

We read Bats
by Elizabeth Carney

and boy did they remember a lot

We used this anchor chart to talk about all the information we learned about bats
Then students completed a story here to take home and read to their parents.

They loved how they could read the story!

To wrap it all up we did a cute craft ...

What drives you batty?
These were a last minute thing but the kids loved them
Find the activity here

Hope ya'll had a good week!
