Flowers in Bloom

I love the spring time ...
the snow is melting and the flowers are in bloom
the days are longer and the weather is much warmer.
Our week kinda reminds me of the book by Eric Carle "The Tiny Seed"
We read this story to show the life cycle of a flower. I love the examples of where flowers can and cannot grow. This book has some great visuals and builds to students understanding of flowers.

We started the week discussing our schema about flowers.
We used this anchor chart to jot down what we knew and throughout the week we added information that we learned.
WOW!
Take a look at all of the new learning we found. We read tons of books, watched videos, and completed activities all about flowers and students really came away with a bigger understanding of flowers.

I like to use out Library time to do some research.
This week we read books and used this anchor chart to discuss the different parts of a flower and why each part is important to the flower.

After our research we filled in a worksheet to practice identifying and writing the parts of a flower.

We ended the week with this super cute booklet that helps students identify what flowers need.

Last but not least we used the scholastic magazine "Plant a Seed" to wrap up all we learned about flowers and plants.

Do you all use the Scholastic Magazines??

I have never used Scholastic Magazine and this LTS position in Kindergarten has exposed me to all of the amazing things this magazine has to offer.
Scholastic provides great features online that allow you to use videos that accompany the information in the magazine.
You also gain access to worksheets and games that can be played as you work through each magazine.
Check it out here ... http://letsfindout.scholastic.com/
If you work with everyday math you are familiar with the spiral program.
This program is new to our district and is taking some getting used to to fully implement it.
Last week we touched on 3-D shapes which seem to be quite challenging.

We used these pictures and cards found on TPT to describe and expose students to the variety of real world objects. What a great FREEBIE

To extend the activity this week we conducted scavenger hunts around the room to find objects in our room and every day life that fit each 3-D shape.

Students completed the sentence "I have _______ and it is a _______"
This really increased students word recognition to each of the 3-d shapes that they are to master.
To wrap it up we played a little 3-D Concentration to help students find and identify 3-D shapes that match.

As a teacher we are always on the prowl for a good read aloud.
Shopping in Sebring on my Mini Vaca this year I found this GEM!
Seriously ... hidden in an antique shop,
tucked away on the street,
in the midst of the sports books I found this...

A Wildflower for All Seasons
Written and Illustrated by a local Florida teacher.
This book was adorable ... it's all about a Wild Flower who stays alive through all of the four seasons. All she needs to do is think of the warm hot sun. This book was adorable and left opportunities for students to turn and talk with their friends increasing their comprehension throughout the story. To close we made wildflowers of our own and wrote what makes us happy inside on each petal. I used this Flower FREEBIE as a craftivity for the story.

What a great week!
No better way to end it than with a MLB dress down day!
